About

The OSR ("Old School Renaissance") is a label usually applied to an informal, disorganized group of table-top RPG players that are interested in the hobby as it was played in the 70s and 80s. In the words of Rob Conley:
To me the Old School Renaissance is not about playing a particular set of rules in a particular way, the dungeon crawl. It is about going back to the roots of our hobby and seeing what we could do differently. What avenues were not explored because of the commercial and personal interests of the game designers of the time.
The best short overviews are probably:

2018-12-06: The list of gameplay principles at the end of Patrick Stuart's post What is Artpunk?

2018-10-06: David Perry's Principia Apocrypha

2008-07-09: Matthew Finch's Quick Primer for Old School Gaming (it is on Lulu but it is free)

Want Your Site Indexed?

Leave a comment here if you want your site added. Please check the "Sites Indexed" tab above to see if your site or blog is already on the list. I have already preemptively added quite a few.

317 comments:

  1. Please do add CreativeMountainGames.com

As a new and old school gamer who started in the early Seventies with wargames before RPGs were even invented, and began RPGing with D&D in 1974, my own RPG tastes and design goals definitely reflect OSR sensibilities and traditions, though I am also a fan of incorporating modern design ideas and innovations.

    Thanks,
    Mark Clover
    CreativeMountainGames.com

  2. Added! Also, you might want to configure a wildcard for your DNS. Currently, if you go directly to CreativeMountainGames.com, rather than www.CreativeMountainGames.com, you get a dead page. Some web browsers are smart enough to try the www address also, but not all of them.

  3. Thanks. I'm unaware of how to do so. I'll investigate how but if you know of a swift solution please email me at Creativemountain@gmail.com

    Much appreciated,

  6. My blog is young, but I'd be happy to be on the list.

    http://builtbygodslongforgotten.blogspot.com/

Incidentally, i've been searching for a blog that I once found but can't find again. It had a post about treasure generation system that used like a 6 digit code, where if your characters loot a merchant caravan, the code might be MMMGGS, where M=trade goods, G=gold and S=silver.
    Does that sound familiar?

  7. http://www.heropress.net

Sporadically game-related (as well as film and TV waffle), but do run OSR conversions of filmic creatures and treasures, as well as general chit-chat about D&D-style games of the old school.

  8. Could you add me to the list too please:
